Age: 45
The PM of one of Asia's fastest-growing economies has succeeded at keeping a fragile peace between the country's color-coded political enemies: Democrats ("yellow shirts"), associated with monarchists, and Pheu Thai party ("red shirts"), with a base of farmers and the working class. In an effort to resolve the deadly fighting in the Muslim, Malay-speaking southern provinces, Shinawatra has turned to Malaysia to help negotiate a peace settlement with the separatists. More than 5,000 people have died in what has been called southeast Asia's "most violent internal conflict." 2013 SPOTLIGHT: After a very public campaign led by actor Leonardo DiCaprio and the World Wildlife Fund, the PM opened the world's biggest wildlife summit in March with a pledge to outlaw Thailand's domestic ivory trade.

Yingluck Shinawatra
Thailand's Prime Minister oversees a country of 67 million with a 2011 GDP of $601 billion, the second largest economy in Southeast Asia. One year into her term, Shinawatra's ruling party has had a tumultuous summer. In July the constitutional Court dismissed a complaint that her party's attempt to amend the constitution amounted to plotting to overthrow the monarchy. Had the court sided with the complainants, it could have ordered Shinawatra's party dissolved just a year after the landslide election that brought it to power. Many feared such a ruling would have provoked mass street protests and possible violence similar to those that followed her brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's 2006 ousting, when street protesters killed over 100 and took over airports and city centers. The PM was educated in both Thailand and the U.S., where she received a Master's in public administration from Kentucky State University in 1991. She has one child with her common-law husband, Anusorn Amornchat. She's embraced social media--she has roughly 80,000 Twitter followers.
